Gazprom Looking Good

After the obstruction of the South Stream pipeline by the EU in 2014, it was assumed, in part due to ideological inclinations that Russian gas exports will suffer.

Two years later, we see that the South Stream obstruction looks more like a tactical move to divert more Russian gas to Northern Europe at the expense of the South-East.

With Nord Stream 2, Turk Stream and Power of Siberia pipelines going ahead, Gazprom is set to almost double its pipeline export capacity by around 2020.

If one were to form an opinion strictly based on the rhetoric coming from Western politicians and our mainstream media, one would think that Russia-Western relations are in for a total break. This has been the case for three years already as the Ukraine crisis and its fallout led to a seemingly irreversible divorce, especially between Russia and the EU. The EU obstruction of the South Stream pipeline project which was meant to take natural gas to Eastern & Southern Europe confirmed to many that the EU was getting serious about cutting its dependence on Russian natural gas imports, which were universally declared to be a dangerous tool of influence and control of Russia over EU member countries and the EU overall. And yet, we are just finding out that the EU imported a record volume of Russian gas in 2016.

Gazprom's (OTCPK:OGZPY) CEO Alexey Miller just announced that the EU imported 179 Bcm of gas from Russia in 2016, which is a 12.5% increase compared with 2015, and is also a new record. New daily export volume records have also been set in recent days, due in large part to colder than normal temperatures in parts of Europe. It is in large part due to Russia's ability to provide Europe with an increase in volumes on short notice when needed, which makes the whole concept that has been trumpeted for the past few years in Europe of reducing reliance on Russia, less than attractive to say the least. Fact is that a combination of declining industrial output and a milder winter may lead to a significant drop in EU gas demand, while a colder than usual winter coupled with an economic recovery, including industrial production, may cause a surge in demand. Russia is in effect that flexible provider which can accommodate Europe's needs.

Gazprom 3Q Earnings: On Russia Dividends, U.S. LNG Energy Supply

By Dimitra DeFotis

Shares of Russia’s state-controlled natural gas producer Gazprom (OGZPY) are down 2.6% today in U.S. trading after the company reported third quarter results.

On first blush, reports indicated that revenue was especially strong in Europe. But with the English-language, “raw” transcript of the earnings conference call, here’s a better explanation of Gazprom’s quarter. From Igor Shatalov, first deputy department head, in the management discussion:

” … in the third quarter of 2016 … total net sales went down by 3%, EBITDA down by 28%, operating cash flow by 40%. In that environment, the free cash flow in the third quarter was negative, as could be expected, that is negative RUB 101 billion, however, across the nine months 2016, free cash flow remained positive at RUB 107 billion. Our net profit went up from a negative number in the third quarter to RUB 102 billion, that’s RUB 102 billion in the third quarter 2016, as compared to a negative number in the third quarter of 2015. In the future, we expect recovery of financial performance following the recovery of metrics and cash prices under long-term contracts with European off-takers …. The fall in our gas sales was, in money terms was, in fact the key driver behind the decrease of our operating cash flow by 16% in nine months 2016. This has also been impacted by operating expenses, gas purchase expenses in nine months 2016 went up by 60% as compared to the same period of nine months 2015 to reach the number of RUB 698.4 billion. This increase is explained by our completed transactions on ex asset swap between Gazprom and Wintershall in Europe …”

Asked by an analyst about European energy supply and demand, and the likely increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments to Europe as a competitive alternative to Gazprom, Mikhail Malgin, representing Gazprom Export, reponded. From the transcript:

” … everyone is talking about potential volumes of LNG first of all coming from the United States and then also Australian. In the course of 2017, we don’t really see any significant downward pressure if you talk about the European markets, because there are other markets such as China, South America, and also the Middle East. They will draw some excessive volume and any impact could be, if at all, relatively small by some spot shipments closer to the end of the year, but definitely not throughout the year of 2017. That is not only our opinion, but also that of industry experts. In a nutshell, these are the foundations of our optimism …”

The Russian government has been pressuring companies to raise dividends. But after a related question, Shatalov said it is premature to divulge a dividend estimates until annual results are tallied and required board meetings are conducted. Gazprom did say it expects to invest more than €2 billion on two important international natural gas pipeline projects that would produce new end markets in and near Europe. Shatalov seemed to indicate that the current level is safe, adding that dividend “flow has been increased” and the yield “has remained throughout the significant level” in recent years. Reuters reported that the government has backed down from dividend demands:

“The government won’t force companies to pay more than 25 percent of their profit in dividends, two government sources told Reuters, confirming a Bloomberg report.”

Belastingen zitten Gazprom dwars
